Lucifer: Manions of the Silence

Lucifer, Vol. 6: Mansions of the SilenceLucifer, Vol. 6: Mansions of the Silence by Mike Carey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ever wonder where eternal creatures like angels and demons go when they get “killed”? I have! According to Mike Carey’s LUCIFER comics, they go to a place called Mansions of the Silence. And in this, the sixth volume of the collected series, Lucifer and several of the supporting characters from the series so far take a trip to the Mansions of Silence to rescue the spirits of Elaine and Mona. One of the things I’m really enjoying about LUCIFER is how minor characters from earlier arcs will often reappear and take on more important roles later. Carey continues to elicit empathy from the reader for these characters. too, which is no small feat when most of them are demons.

Lucifer: Inferno

Lucifer, Vol. 5: InfernoLucifer, Vol. 5: Inferno by Mike Carey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lucifer returns to Hell for his duel with Amendiel severely weakened by the recent attack against him; Mazikeen goes looking for the magic feathers that will restore Lucifer to full strength, and runs into a very dangerous ex-boyfriend; and Samson from the Bible investigates Elaine’s death. However, the best story in this volume is the standalone “Bearing Gifts,” in which a demon asks a devoutly religious man for help. It’s touching and beautifully told. At this point, LUCIFER has become one of my favorite comics series ever.

My reviews LUCIFER are just becoming embarrassing love letters to the genius of Mike Carey at this point, so I’ll just say that even four volumes in the series continues to surprise and amaze me. Truly excellent stuff.

Mazikeen goes looking for a new face, Elaine goes looking for her ghost friend Mona, and Lucifer goes looking for trouble in Effrul in this third trade collection. As a series, LUCIFER just keeps getting better and better. Mike Carey has written something really special.
