The Gift That Keeps On Giving

I received another royalty check for my chapter about plotting short stories in Writer Digest Books’ On Writing Horror. Not bad for a book that came out six years ago, huh? Granted, it’s not a huge royalty check — I’m sharing royalties with something like two dozen other authors — but it could cover a morning croissant and coffee, and the fact that On Writing Horror is still earning is something to celebrate.

Speaking of celebrating, if you’re looking for a holiday gift for any of your budding horror writer friends out there, you could do a lot worse than On Writing Horror. (By the way, it’s good for writers of other genres, too!) Apparently, even six years on, the advice in its pages still resonates with people. Forget about Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, Harlan Ellison, David Morrell, Jack Ketchum, and all the other amazing authors in this book — I take full credit for its success!

Now, where can I buy a croissant?

I am home sick today, so started working on my Christmas list. This book just went on it.
